Producing Standard RDF (Refuse-Derived Fuel) is a sophisticated waste management process that transforms municipal solid waste (MSW) or industrial waste into a high-energy, homogenized fuel source. The goal is to remove non-combustibles and concentrate the caloric value.
Here is the standard production process broken down into its core stages:
1. Pre-Treatment & Initial Sorting
The process begins with the arrival of raw waste. The primary goal here is to remove large, bulky items and hazardous materials that could damage the machinery.
- Reception: Waste is discharged into a bunker.
- Bag Breaking: Mechanical “bag rippers” open plastic trash bags to release the contents for sorting.
- Manual Sorting: A “picking station” where workers remove large contaminants like PVC, batteries, or oversized debris.
2. Size Reduction (Primary Shredding)
To make the sorting process efficient, the waste must be uniform in size.
- Primary Shredder: The waste is processed through a heavy-duty shredder to reduce it to a manageable size, typically between 150mm and 300mm.
3. Screening and Classification
This stage separates the waste by size and weight to isolate the “high-caloric” fraction (plastics, paper, wood).
- Trommel Screens: Rotating cylindrical drums that separate fine organic matter (which is too wet/low-energy) from the larger combustible materials.
- Wind Sifters: A high-velocity air stream blows “light” materials (paper, plastic film) upward while “heavy” materials (stones, glass) fall to the bottom.
4. Metal Recovery
Removing metals is crucial to protect the final boilers and to recover valuable recyclable materials.
- Magnetic Separator: Overband magnets pull out ferrous metals (iron and steel).
- Eddy Current Separator: Uses electromagnetic induction to “flick” non-ferrous metals (like aluminum cans) out of the waste stream.
5. Secondary Shredding (Fine Shredding)
The material is further refined to meet the specific requirements of the end-user (usually cement kilns or power plants).
- Fine Shredder: Reduces the material to a final size, often <30mm or <50mm, depending on the fuel specification.
6. Drying and Pelletizing (Optional)
Depending on the moisture content and the desired energy density:
- Drying: If the waste is too wet, it is passed through a thermal dryer to reduce moisture to below 15%.
- Pelletizing: The loose fluff is compressed into high-density pellets. This makes the RDF easier to transport and ensures a more consistent burn rate.
